This doesn't sound like a job for an 8051 to me! :-( You may be right. I don't know just yet what manner of throughput is needed; for the moment I'm presuming that the enveloped widget is a full speed (12 MBaud) device, in which case a 100 MHz Cygnal F13x might more or less suffice (not to be ARM phobic, I just already am familiar with the parts and the toolchain). The book I just got, "USB Complete", mentions a few peripheral parts intended for USB On The Go (OTG) applications, where devices can act as limited function hosts, so 1 or 2 of them might give me what I need. Not to sound like a total ignoramus, but what's the ARM toolchain world looking like these days? Is there a complete GNU / freeware solution available, or is it a $5K / seat situation? What do folks do for debuggers / probes? David |
