Not to sound like a total ignoramus, but what's the ARM toolchain world looking like these days? Is there a complete GNU / freeware solution available, or is it a $5K / seat situation? What do folks do for debuggers / probes?

but why do that
as to "$5K / seat situation" the competition in selling ARM chips is so big that, if you whisper to a dcecent distributor "I am going to but 10.000+ uC chips" the toolchain is on your desk the next morning for free.
