One more thing came into my mind, once it happened to me, the GND wire in the cable was broken - well, intermittent... depending on the bending of the cable... It had the weirdest effects, even if it was permanently diosconnected, some characters got echoed OK some distorted, some not at all... Couldn't this be a similar case?
