Hi Marek,
if you use a 16550 on a board which already has an external memory decoder the first two points probably do not apply.

Otherwise (if you have a CPU with integrated Flash/Xdata memory) you loose IO Pins and need more PCB area. (The link Joe Gold has given also points to some interesting devices.)

On the other hand a 16550 is a valid choice too, so it depends on what you want:)

If your web search for 8051 and 16550 didn't show useful results try again with the older device 16450.
