Probably an Urban Legend:
In the bygone Cold War days, USSR had copied among other things an IBM mainframe. They exhibited this alleged copy in various electronics/ computer exhibitions. Sure enough, in one of exhibitions, it broken down and the engineers at hand could not repair it.
Coincidentally, an IBM engineer(story says he was a Texan) was visiting the exhibition and recognizing it was a copy, he offered to help repair it.
While repairing it, he modified the code such that, the attached console always had a scrolling message "Copied from IBM".
