Throughout the aerospace/defense industry, it was common practice in the '80's to fire anyone who used a one-shot for anything, no matter what his level of seniority.

Have you considered a supervisor IC or, at least, a reset generator?

Those won't fix EVERYTHING, but it's unlikely they'll be less stabile than a one-shot.
