The shaft encoders I've used, and it's been a while, don't have any intelligence, hence, don't produce a CRC. They just provide a position code. The ones I remember from most recent contact have a 9-bit code.

Those aren't the ones you use, but, why is it that you think they provide a CRC. Do you have documentation for the equipment that you're working with that tells you there's a CRC?

Have you tried the old "tried and true" CRC-16? Inverted?

If the shaft-encoder vendor whose product you're planning to use, won't give you such elementary information, how about using one of the competing vendors?
