Mark,

are you using the SiLabs IDE and watching the checksum instead of checking the uart output? The checksum might not even be written at all but stay in a register all the time. The watch window will never show the correct value. Check the generated asm. Using volatile will make sure the variable is written back everytime and viewable in the watch window.
