The reason C allows this is on purpose.
You move from ASM to C for a reason. It is a HLL bringing asm baggae will bring it problems too.

Start the Pure C rules. Then break them as needed. Not on a whim but with though.

As my Pascal teacher said. If you use Globals you get an F, unless you can demonstrate there is not other way.
