The checksum is needed for the ROM contents. The purpose is not for verification purposes, but more identification purposes. We have other devices already that expect to be able to read the global checksum of the device before beginning master\slave communication if it's valid\known.

An 8051 that has a built-in global checksum read function: Philips LPC series via the IAP.
