Back in the old days, as you put it, I acquired a batch of mismanufactured ROM's (yes, the hard-coded ones) from NSC, that had a checksum routine. When the 8085 ran the checksum, it always showed that one error, shortly after which it went "into the weeds" because of the erroneous bit.

I made them into "high-tech tie-tacks" as they were pretty white ceramic with gold pins and cover, then gave them away at a holiday party. I did the same with my first i8008.
