The 2708 from early video are still going blank. To the anoyance of collectors.

I never had a CSum one show bad either.
In theroy a failure in memory would either not work at all, fail CSUM, or be bad enough to pass the CSUM and work incorrectly.

Since the OP wanted to read the CSUM externally, he may have had a better use. Depending on that the choice of CRC or CSUM whould have to be made.
