So I didn't add to the load.

I couldn't see anything wrong with the use of Mode 0. It differs from the other modes in ways that were clearly understood by the user. His code looked right.

Apparently the problem was caused by something I didn't see, the monitor's use of the serial port or its timing, perhaps. It remains unclear, at least so far, what the problem really was.
