... so you added mov CHPENR,#0 to the startup code (and possibly removed the juggling with CHPCON before and after the XRAM writes) - and it solved the problem?

Was this some sort of the "nonstandard atomicity" problem? Possibly some ISR disabling AUXRAM write while the "main" wanted to write to it?
