We do boards with a single ground plane with no splits all the time ...
and they're quiet. Very quiet. Again, the thing to do is pay attention to your return currents and ensure that you don't route digital signals over the quiet analog area. A very well qualified layout person can do 'magic' and if extreme thought and care is taken in the layout the "connected at the right place" 'trace' can be as wide as the board. however, I do suggest that if the layout person is not "very well qualified" that the split layer approach is applied.
