I have seen somewhere a ckt diagram which makes PC
keyboard compatible to uCs may be I2C or serial type.
In India keyboards are so cheap -just Rs.100 for 110key type
(thats $2.5 or less) and if you think some keys are extra than
needed then just scratch pcb tracks of those keys so they
wont work!
In some systems I have seen full keyboards used but only
few keys are used for commands. There you would get ? prompt
if anyother irrevelant key was pressed. This is better solution
than scratching if you have LCD display for output.
