you have not mentioned how much basic experience you have with the '51, assembler and C.
if you do not already have a few '51 projects done, what your teacher suggest sounds about right.

Using a 8051 to read packets from a PCIMA(or PCMCIA) wifi card and display them in a lcd
combined with
i have 4 weeks to do this proyect and i could say i can invest 30-40% of my time in it.
would be a stretch for me with decades of experience.
