I worked on a thing with SPI peripherals and the MCU had a hardware interface for SPI with 4-modes. One peripheral would work in one of the available modes but the other could not be supported. As such I had to resort to a slow software routine to talk to the second peripheral. Both peripheral parts are spendy devices from the same name brand semiconductor manufacturer!!
