Actually, I just remembered that that's not correct. Our RTC actually pulses a supervisor IC which, in turn, completely resets the part which is a fail-safe, albeit brutal, way to come out of power down mode. But we're using the TI MSC1210 and the datasheet itself indicates that only an external reset can exit stop mode. So that's what we did.
