There are a [u]very[/u] small number of applications were certain types of NPN transistors may turn on with the very low 20uA of base current [i](when the required collector current is extremely low)[/i]. However the same such transistors are likely to be irreparably damaged by the high surge of base current during the two clock fast pullup.
