Could you perhaps clarify your objectives further? If your goal is to have "some demo hardware with a display and BASIC interpreter", from the perspective of just wanting to learn about micros and languages higher than assembly code, then perhaps you may need to consider these others: 1. BASIC Stamps: There are lots of variations of these and learning systems that make LCD (and other hardware) interfaces very simple; example code exists all over the internet 2. PICAxe: Similiar to above, but another flavor of microcontroller. They're easy to get running also. Just some other options... At any rate, good luck, and be sure to get good hardware so you don't spend all your time debugging the hardware instead of learning! (Not fun!) Why not let him follow the path he's chosen, rather than trying to route him toward what YOU would do? Too often people who can't answer the question that was asked try to get by with an answer to a question that wasn't asked. Is that what you've done here? He doesn't realize, of course, how big a task a PS/2 keyboard interface is. He probably doesn't realize how non-portable a PC keyboard makes any item. He obviously doesn't realize that BASIC, of any flavor, will do little more than get in the way of his stated objective, which is learning something about what he's doing. Clearly, the first thing he needs to do is to size his task. Steering him toward products such as the STAMP, which isolates him from what he wants to do, is probably not helpful. He might as well use a PC. In fact, steering him toward anything he's not said he wants to do is misguided, as it will confuse him. Let him do what he wants! Help him if you can. Don't try to make him do what you know just because you don't know how to do what he wants. RE |
