As I have said umpteen times, relabeled or identically made, these chips are probably a Crolles http://english.grenoble-isere.com/235-allia...olles2.htm developemnt where Philips and ST (and I think a few otheres) developed (and made?) chips together. NXP has now pulled out. And, as I have answered oh so many times, SST (i.e. Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.) is NOT ST (nee SGS-Thompson). Not that it matters a lot. Erik Malund said:
Also where are the ST LPCs? The whole LPC story was apparently the last desperate attempt to save the '51 business at NXP. Aimed at the low-end "cheap" market (I can dig out Bill Houghton's post here saying basically this, if you want), however, the price/performance when compared to competition (Atmel AVR, Microchip PIC) is simply poor: only 3V, cumbersome programming (AVRs and PICs are famous for being programmed by the "rusty nail" four-wire "programmers" quite sucesfully), problematic reset, hesitant distribution down to the masses at not-oh-so-good prices. Consequently, I doubt their sales of the 'LPC are sky high, the proof being the nonexistent public support. I would not be very surprised if they would drown the LPC line within 3-5 years. Again, I wish I am wrong in my assumptions. Erik Malund said:
Anyhow I have no idea whatsoever what NXP is going to do with their '51s, but I do contest your assertion based on the 'facts' you base them on. Draw your own conclusions. I do mine. I am 38 so I think am not that long at this battlefield; but I am fed up with obsolescence problems by now; hence, I won't suggest a NXP '51 into any new design. As a matter of fact, I won't suggest ANY '51 into a new design. I am very, very sorry of that, but that's life. Actually, I am doing some hobby stuff right now, built around a P89V51RD2... ;-) JW PS.[a bit later] Just out of curiosity, I went to digikey to have a look at the LPCs - I remember Bill Houghton saying here, what a feat is it to have digikey stock the LPCs, down to the masses - to find out that in the "product folder" of any particular 'LPC, under the header "Product Training Module(s)" they offer an advertisement (a FLASH "video") titled "Migrating from 8/16-Bit MCUs to 32-Bit ARMs"... Tell me about NXP's strategies... |
