For assembler it is absolutely no problem, but if you use C as programming language, be aware, that the code generated by it is mostly much bigger then the obe generated by the Development tools provided by the Microcontroller Manufacturer...

I am using such $US6500 Closed-Source-Software and the code has arround 35% of the sice generated by SDCC...

You have the choice, using a 8051 with bigger Flash/EEPROM/ROM or buying, a for the product of your choice, the optimised Development-Tools.
