I can't say that I have seen any long pauses in the USB communication.

If transmitting data from a USB disk over the network, the network load graph do not show any significant dips even for several hours long transfers of > 1GB/minute. At the same time I may possibly have a FW stream to or from an internal HDD without any noticeable difference in transfer rates or bandwidth dips.
