#161059 - Don't kill off SCSI too quickly Responding to: ???'s previous message |
And SCSI is dead, because the cables got really expensive, and it was finicky about termination. FireWire is superior to SCSI in pretty much all aspects. A bit of a simplification that FW is superior. It is not for bandwidth. It is not for latency. It is not for supervision. You have a bit of a problem with S.M.A.R.T. information using both USB and FW. When talking about transfer rates: FW 400 wins over USB for external disks. FW 800 wins over FW 400. SCSI/SAS wins over FW 800. Note that SAS is to SCSI what SATA is to (P)ATA. About the parallell SCSI cables - yes, quite expensive. But then again, server-class SCSI or SAS or SATA disks are expensive so the cable price doesn't really matter so much. Especially since it may connect quite a number of disks. How many 15krpm disks will you be able to find, that isn't SCSI/SAS? Or did you mean a SAS enclosure with external FW interface? |
