I don't know why people are so scared of SMT stuff, with 0.05 " pin spacing PLCC and TQFP parts are easily soldered. Try using proper solder paste to make the joints, apply it with a hypodermic needle and syringe. DON'T do this if you have connections running between the pins, but use the syringe to put a long bead of solder ACROSS all the pads (drawing a solder paste square on the board. Seat the component on the paste, then apply heat from a small hot air gun, we use one of the catalytic gas powered ones from "Weller".

Most of our stuff is prototyped in SMT now.
