We have taken the MSC1210 which is smaller than a 40 pin package and built a board that fits the 40 pin profile. Then you have most the features you want in the future. We also have a Basic designed by MDL Labs that would give you a very good Stamp package. Of course you still can use C or anything else.
What is your cost goal? You mentioned that some devices would be too expensive.
