I don't see anything ugly when using All UPPERCASE for as long as you can be consistent thoughout the code. By the way, what is ugly about using long meaningful symbol names? A meaningful symbol name can save you a lot of time writing comments. If you think that anything longer than five characters is a crap, then perhaps the largest code you have written is only about 2KB.
