Yes, I realized that you will have to use a closed-loop control system, but that is the tricky part. That is what I meant by having to handle higher order systems... The control system itself gets more complicated when handling things like momentum, damping or dead-time. If you want to do it conventionally, you will have to come up with a mathematical model of the system, and then deduce the feedback algorithm from that. This is the modelling I was referring to. Failing that, you can use fuzzy logic or neural network methods...which is actually much easier sometimes than modelling complex systems! :-D It definitely is easier than tuning PID loops :-)) Fuzzy Logic or Neural Nets will also be much more interesting to try out ;-)) I am a firm believer that AI can help solve complex problems feasibly where other methods fail.
