Im currently working (along with 3 team-mates) on Active Fin Stabilizer Control System for Ships. Though, my part is coding the system, Im aware of whats going on.
Well, relating your topic, I understand that you are planning to use a closed loop feedback control system (just like ours) and you need something in place of our fins (for ships) to stabilize the Camera, or still better any mechanism which should give you clear pictures.
I feel that it is more convenient for you to use an angular accelerometer to get the direction, angle and speed of motion of the car and then, adjust the captured image through software, just like you have some motion_blur features in a good photo-editing software. These algorithms are real good and can give you acceptably good images (later converted to video).
