Hey Steve

As far as I have read, the "physical" layer i balanced transmission on a twisted pair. And I think that a standard 120 ohm RS 485 line will do. I plan to use standard CAT 5E wirring - 4 twisted pairs - which costs next to nothing these days

Pls. somebody corret me if I am wrong.
