For distances up to about 15~20 metres, RS-485 can actually work at 10Mbits/s. At speeds up to about 120 kbits/s you can reach a maximum distance of about 1200 metres (4000 feet as specified). This does require good, low loss cables and proper termination, but I guess that the same is true for CAN drivers.
