it doesn't look like their magazine is online, but article descriptions are.
without reading the articles, it looks like the point of the competition may have been to make applications targeted to their specific Flash board. from their point of view, maybe the best submittal was the one that had the most work put into it, or that was the most complicated.
  • T.O.C. Jan 2003: "Results of our Flash Competition" (that's all it says about the competition on this T.O.C. page; jh)
  • T.O.C. Feb 2003: "Chess Computer
    This project is intended to rekindle interest in user-programmed computer chess by making the task more challenging. The result is a chess computer based on our hugely successful Flash Micro Board."
