Hi Rob;

"Are you dragging current via a damaged RS232 chip?..". No I tested the chip and it is ok. Nearly i cann't do anything about the proper earth grounding. But i can isolate the circuit. I looked at the Maxim's site for their MAX250/252. But using these chips will increase the cost.
