It depends on your application, if you are designing a cheap toy then ram test is a waste of time, however if you are designing medical equipment or aerospace equipment then you want to be sure your device(including RAM) is working properly before you rely on its decision. It happened with me that certain locations of EEPROM failed during normal operation of a microcontroller project where if I didn't implement a BIT would have never fond out what was wrong with my microcontroller.
