#39526 - RE: Verifying Internal ROM/RAM. Responding to: ???'s previous message |
<html>
the article Rob mentioned was The Zen of Diagnostics, Jack Ganssle. i have heard of EPROMs being weakly programmed so that they passed post-burn checks but failed later (so the burn routines were modified to extend the burn times, or repeat the burns, or something like that; i heard this third-hand). there is also the possibility that someone will, later on, mishandle, mis-design, mis-specify, mis-construct, or mis-order the hardware or components of it. it would be a good idea to take on the responsibility of detecting these mishaps, even though they are not caused by the firmware engineer (unless he/she is wearing the hardware engineer hat, too). even if (or especially if) you are not with the company when the mishap happens. better to worry about whether the memory test works, than whether it is the memory causing the problem (with no test in place). james </html> |
