You should really consider finding a schematic of a circuit that suits your fancy and then use the software from Epress PCB (available at this link) to create your own artwork for the board. The software is downloaded from their web site and is quite easy to learn and use.

Once you have the artwork completed you can save it in a file on your PC for later reference. Obviously they want you to use the software to directly order PC boards from them. But it is possible to extract the artwork out of this package if you want to make your own pattern films and corresponding PC boards. Within the software it is possible to define the colors of each layer to black with white background so you can print with highest contrast. There is also a menu through which you can individually enable and disable each layer as viewed on the screen. For higher resolution you may even choose to display the layers on the screen an do screen captures of the artwork and save into a file.
