But what about the timing? Can you do consecutive reads without problems? And what µc and speed do you use?

I had exactly the same idea ;-)

I have this implemented using 2 x 245's and 2 x 574's , but I am currently changing this so that it's all in a CPLD.

I only use two '574s. What do you need the 245s for?
