while i'm reading the last postings i found some discussion about IR-'protected' doors.
Let me say some words about what happended 1998 in Germany at Duesseldorf-Airport. I'm not sure about all the details, but i like to discuss the principles.
There was a huge fire close to the elevator in floor 1. Some people used the elevator to reach this floor (they didn't know anything about the fire). The elevator-door opened in floor 1. Immediatelly the elevator was fullfilled with unhealty smoke. The IR-detector was obscured by the smoke. For safety-reasons, the door can't close in this situation, no button was available to close the door manually. I'm not sure, but some of the people died on a lethal dose of smoke.

I don't know non-German elevator-specifics, but pay attention about safety-installations which are dangerous.
