If you do want to look at using an optical coupling barrier then you may consider one of the newer linear optocouplers. There are several manufacturers of these things and they eliminate the need to go to a V 2 F solution. Plus they are built with a self correcting circuit built in. Seems to me these things are good where accuracy of 2% is good enough.
