Hi,

I've seen a neat use for sync-mode USARTs (8251A) : for connecting a mag-stripe card reader! You can set this USART for 5-bit characters, the sync character is the B(hex) which is the 1st char on the stripe, & the reader's clock output is the USARTs clock input - works fine!
