The question was about hardware. Aren't we a bit off-topic here?
Maybe we had better stick to his question a bit and dicuss about strategies of deciding which port pin to use for what (as in the example: keep the LED display segments together on the same port, use an external interrupt pin for the detector, maybe reserve the RxD/TxD pin, etcetera)
