The circuit detects amplitude of the echo using the peak hold circuit. (Greater the amplitude, nearer the target). The V-F converts amplitude to frequency which is accumulated by the timer/counter module in the PIC16F84. The accumulated value is representative of the return signal strength, hence distance to the target. Accurate measurements beyond simple proximity necessitate calibration.
