Why you think, this is not linear ?
This can only be nonlinear, if the size of your wheels change with the speed.


I think, you have enough time to let the calculation done by the 8051.
Since for the humans eyes its not good to change a displayed value faster than 10 times per second.

To generate a conversion table in assembler was very awkward, since assemblers can not do floating point calculations.
