THe reliability of IR can be made way more reliable by modulating the IR transmitter with pulses and then polling the receiver only when you expect the possibility of pulses going through. This is also the scheme used when you have a whole bunch of emitter / detector pairs in a system and you can't accept cross talk between channels. It is even possible to eliminate most needs for collimators.
