Yes Tx, from the 8051's perspective, wouldn't be a problem except for fanout as you mentioned.

I didn't even think of using a simple gate. That would deffinatly do the trick.

by chance do you think there is a "diode" solution? As I would rather not place another IC if a diode or some other small protective object could be used instead.
