You are quite right. I was mistaken - sorry about that everyone. I looked up the spectrums for two Fairchild LED's; one blue and one white. The white LED is possibly based on the blue LED. Take a look at the spectrum of the blue LED (Fairchild MV8G03, 3500 mcd @ 20 mA, 3.6 V): Compare that to the spectrum of the white LED (Fairchild MV8W00, 2500 mcd @ 20 mA, 3.6 V):
It looks like a phosphor was used that absorbs around 500 nm (blue) and radiates around 600 nm (amber), however the phosphor radiation is much broader than the LED radiation. The last spectrum is from the White Luxeon LED Emitter that Steve referred to: The spectrum looks very close to a normal white LED. I hope this sheds some light on white LED's.
