#50105 - RE: Static Damage- How real ?
Responding to: ???'s previous message
The best actions you can take for handling compoments on the field are:

- Try to avoid working on electronic equipment in carpeted areas.

- Provide a connection from the chassis of the equipment under service to the Earth Ground at all times during the procedure.

- Obtain and wear clothing that is made of low or non static generating fabric.

- Use short sleeved shirts.

- Obtain and wear a conductive wrist strap all during the time of the repair procedure. The strap should ideally connect to earth via a conductive sheet that covers the top of the work table. The sheet can be metal or electrostatically conductive rubber or plastic. In the absence of a sheet then clip the lead of the wrist strap to the earth wiring or to the chassis of the equipment.

- Keep replacement boards, components, modules, drives etc in their conductive storage bags till the very last moment. Hold the chassis and bags before opening to let any possible charge on you or the bag to drain to the ground.

- When handling components or modules try to avoid handling via the leads.

- When handling boards do so by the edges. If you have a modern board such as a PCI plugin board note that almost all of these have dozens of very sensitive VLSI pins connected to very conductive gold traces at the bus connector. It is actually very easy to destroy a PCI interface card with static when you did not know there was a discharge event. With sufficient accumulated charge you can blow IC inputs with only several hundred volts of static potential.

That should give you a start.
