A much simpler solution would be to leave the chip on in "power down mode". There are chips out there that use only a few microamps in that mode. The P89C66x devices are absolutotally wonderful chips, but you can find less power hungry chips for a battery operated device. Also, do not forget that power consumption is proportional to oscillator frequency.
