I would rather switch the high side (+) but that may be just my own preference. Make sure that if you add a regulator (why a 1A type? There are many smaller sized regulators that will do the job just as good) the FET is located between the battery and the regulator!

Also note Michaels posting and my reply to that. You will need to add some "intelligence" to your code to switch on and off properly.
